Fequently Asked Questions About Interventional Procedures
- Is it a surgery? How will the interventional procedure be done?
This does not involve surgery. The entire procedure is performed through a small puncture in the fistula or graft. This puncture is smaller than that of a dialysis needle.
The physician takes moving pictures of the access using a contrast agent (non-iodine dye) and fluoroscopy (an x-ray done in real time). If any narrowings are discovered, a balloon catheter is inserted through the same small puncture to open the problem area. This is known as angioplasty.
- Is the interventional procedure painful?
During the procedure we are able to give you medication to keep you comfortable. Patients are advised not to eat or drink before this procedure.
- How long will does the interventional procedure take?
The average procedure usually takes approx. 45-60 minutes. Your appointment will be scheduled to minimize the waiting period. Most of our patients tell us they spend more time waiting to be admitted to their hospital’s emergency room.
